Something was lying on the double yellow line in the middle of a dark curvy road. As the car approached in the headlights picked up the eyes starring back at the vehicle. At first the driver thought the headlights were shining on a hit deer but as they neared the fallen animal they realized is was a dog who had been hit. The dog was raising it's head trying to get the attention of the vehicle so as not to be hit again. The driver immediately turned around, stopped in the middle of the road with emergency flashers on and the 2 people got out to assist the injured dog. The scooped him up in a sheet and put him on the passenger seat. Only minutes from RCAR they rushed him to our rescue.
Upon first examination he had a large gapping wound on his right shoulder. The wound was deep enough to show several layers of tissue, muscle and tendons as well as a possible fracture. There were other cuts and scrapes on his body but the front shoulder was noticably the most imparative upon intake. Even without the accident, this dog was in bad shape, he was very thin, backbone, hip bones and ribs were easily visible. He was showing signs of shock from the pain and extreme cold. Ashley and Kelly attended to him immediately. Almost non-responsive, the dog seemed he was drifting away. Dr. Covington was on the phone for consult and they administered a medicine for pain and anti-inflammatory. He quickly became aware that they were trying to give him water and yogurt via a syringe and livened up to drink as much as possible through the syringe offered without lifting his head. He was laid on a soft memory foam covered dog bed and had blankets layed over him for warmth. He appeared to rest through the night as much as possible and seemed to get some relief from the medicines given.

Only hours later, early on Monday morning, after receiving more water, yogurt, medicines for pain and anti-inflammatory, Connie, Ashley and Kelly prepared him to be taken to Mitchell Mill Animal Hospital and care of Dr. Covington and staff. His bed was slid over a sturdy piece of plywood used as a striker board. They lifted him up and carefully carried his make-shift stretch stretcher across the deep snow covered yard to the waiting warm vehicle. They laid his stretcher and bed in the jeep and secured him for the trip.
Jefferson is currently being examined at MMAH and we will keep you updated with his prognosis.
Whatever his needs may be.... HE NEEDS YOU! This sweet fella deserves a fighting chance!
